Widely considered Chile's largest and best-known beach resort town, Viña del Mar is the modern neighbor to the gritty port city of Valparaiso. The two cities could not be more different. The city was founded in 1874 as a weekend retreat and garden residence for the wealthy elite from Valparaíso and Santiago, and it has remained a top destination for Santiaguinos ever since. Viña's manicured lawns, monolithic 1960s apartment buildings, and sandy beaches packed with sunbathers in the summer months are an extreme contrast to the ramshackle streets of Valparaíso. While the beaches are popular with locals, Viña is certainly no beach paradise. The ocean is icy and often too rough for swimming, and the crowded beaches pale in comparison to the Mediterranean or Caribbean. Just along the coast, the beaches in the town of Reñaca are far better.
The cities true highlights are its beautiful buildings, its sophisticated nightlife, and its healthy vibe. Its restaurant scene is vibrant and fun. In terms of sights, perhaps the most famous are the Flower Clock, a meticulously landscaped flower-bed complete with working dials and flanked by exotic palms, and the Moai statue that stands outside the Fonck Museum. This is one of only two genuine moais found outside of Easter Island, given as a gift to the city for the museum’s sterling archaeological efforts on the island. The city also offers one of the most famous casinos in the country.
For activities outside the city, take a drive north for 10km to Concón, for splendid coastal views and great seafood. Valparaiso is a short drive from the city and is certainly worth a visit. Best explored on foot, it is perhaps the most interesting of all Chilean cities.
